The reading shows three reasons that ensuring successful rhino reproduction and survival in captivity is difficult. However, the speaker contends that the problems mentioned in reading can be solved.
First, the writer states that many female rhinos in captivity fail to conceive. But the professor argues that this problem can be solved by changing the diet. In fact, hormone imbalances lead to the infertility and these imbalances are results of the diet. Captive rhinos are usually fed on hay, which is uncommon in the wild. So, adjusting diet might improve the fertility.
Second, the author demonstrates that some captive rhinos have chronic foot disease because they walk on hard surfaces for a long period. Nevertheless, the professor says that radiographic imaging technology allows scientists to look directly at bones to identify defects and deformities early. As a result, rhinos have more chances to be treated successfully.
Third, the passage points out that some young rhinos born in captivity suffer from cerebral softening, increasing the mortality. In contrast, the speaker suggesting that this disorder occurred in rhino babies whose mothers were relatively old when they reproduced because older rhino mothers have a larger buildup of certain toxic chemicals in their bodies. Thus, this disease can be prevented as long as the researchers only allow young mothers to get pregnant. (218 words)
