Let's continue our discussion of Renaissance art and architecture. Remember, the Renaissance in Europe lasted from roughly the mid-1300 the early-1600.

Okay, so the year is 1401 and where in Florence, Italy, where competition is being held to select the artist who created bronze panel sculptures that will adorn the new doors of the baptistery, a small building situated near the city's great cathedral. The competition has two clear front runners: Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti.

Brunelleschi and Ghiberti couldn't have been more different in their approach to the competition.

Brunelleschi, who was suspicious by nature, was always worried that people were going to copy or steal his ideas. So, he disappeared into his workshop to work in secrecy. He was so obsessed by this fear that he even wrote his notes encode.

Ghiberti on the other hand through the doors of his workshop wide open and invited the world in to have a look at the sample panel he was creating. He really endeared himself to the tons of people by encouraging them to make suggestions about the panels' design which he then integrated into the finished work. Ghiberti's approach drew more on the consensus of taste and judgment whereas Brunelleschi’s was fiercely personal and individualistic.
