The writer points out that medication advertisements are harmful to the consumers. However, the professor demonstrated a contradictory idea that it plays a positive role in informing the public.

First, the professor refutes the viewpoint showed in the passage that television advertisements do not represent the effects of medications in a balanced and objective way by saying that the consumers would form a object view about the medication’s risks and benefits. It is because consumers would do their own research by surfing the Internet and discussing with their doctors.

Second, the writer states that if the medicine is advertised on television, its sales would rise dramatically. On the contrary, the professor makes the point that the sales rise due to people find out a good product that was little known before. For instance, people who want to stop smoking would use nicotine patches when the medicine is advertised on television. As a result, people will find that nicotine patches are very useful and the sale of the nicotine patches will rise too.

Finally, the reading material points out that some advertisements may harm consumers because the government dose not exercise enough control over the content of the advertisements. The listening, in contrast, holds a different view by stating that the government would punish the companies when they break the rules. If the government receives complaints about the pharmaceutical companies, they would be punished and pay a significant amount of money. So the pharmaceutical companies are not free to create and break rules.
